Author Spotlight: Dr. D. Vincent (Bud) Ford.
Dr. Bud is no stranger to walking his talk, to adversity and to life’s challenges.
He grew up in an abusive and dysfunctional home, hated school and was headed for self destruction. He was going to drop out of high school until his dad sad "You might as well drop out, you are to dumb to graduate." That comment made him determined to stay in school and graduate. Then God sent an angel into his life – his wife Marilyn – and his life began to change as he determined to provide the best for her.
Providing the best meant he had to go to college, which was a problem because he could barely read, had no study skills and had graduated 99 out of 100 in his high school class. He was dropped from college three times because of poor grades but he continued to go back, teaching himself how to read, write and study, and eventually earning a PhD with honors.
Dr. Bud’s journey taught him the value of perseverance, of determination, of hard work and passion, of goal setting, and especially the value of putting off getting what you want today in order to have something better in the future – delaying gratification.
Dr. Bud went on to become a high school teacher, high school principal and a school superintendent. He also worked in industry as a project engineer, and he is an ordained clergy and a community leader.
Dr. Bud has been involved in city transformation efforts for the past fifteen years and is the founder and CEO of the non-profit corporation Mission Miami Valley, which is dedicated to transforming America, city by city, in this generation.
In his role as CEO of Mission Miami Valley, Dr. Bud has facilitated pastors’ groups, led outreach, organized pastors’ summits, led community-wide task forces, chaired community committees, and participated in several city-reachers schools, national City Impact Roundtables, seminars as well as conferences too numerous to mention.
Dr. Bud has been intensely involved in the transformation of a men’s prison and with the leadership of the prison’s Aryan Brotherhood gang. It was through this weekly three year involvement that the book “Transformation: The Missing Piece” was birthed. The three years involvement at the prison as well as the preparation years in the city transformation movement made it possible for understanding what God was literally showing as a model for transformation in cities and in individual lives.
The book is a no-nonsense kind of book, just like Dr. Bud is a no-nonsense kind of guy who walks his talk and who speaks direct and with truth. The book goes abruptly from a description of the transformed prison to what it takes by people to be able to engage in effective transformation. People have to deal with themselves and come into the presence of the Lord. Egos and the self-sufficiency of people have to be dealt with and people have to begin to follow God’s patterns for coming into His presence. It is necessary to be sent by Him to do the work, and those involved must be willing to give all credit to Him.
The missing piece is getting rid of self-sufficiency and being dependent upon God. The powerful background experiences of Dr. Bud give him the credentials to speak directly and boldly to what is required for transformation to take place, both in the individual and in the city. He not only has credentials, he has walked his talk.
Dr. Bud is currently deeply involved in the transformation of Miami Valley in southwest Ohio and especially in the heart of the valley in Dayton, Ohio.
